131 km from the capitol city of Colombo along the
southern costal belt, and 16 km from the sea port
city of Galle, an ancient fortified Dutch Colony
with its magnificent Dutch Fort, fishing harbor and
the famous jungle beach. En route is Unawatuna, a
beach resort which boasts of been one of the great
beaches of the world. Villa Modarawattha is located
three hundred meters from white sandy beaches
and palm trees on the surf of the beautiful Indian
Ocean. Watch the breathtaking sunset from your
veranda over the vegetation on the banks of the
Koggala Lake and be sometimes teased by the
occasional visit of the monkey from the nearby
jungles. A boat trip down the lake and/or a visit to
the Islands is a must.
It would be a matter of great interest to watch the
‘Stilt Fisherman’ at work in the shallow waters of
the Koggala reef or simply enjoy some moments of
snorkeling!
Koggala itself is characterized not only for her
great beaches, but also for her coconut and cinnamon
plantations.
Villa Modarawattha
or ‘House by the Lake’ is neighbor to one of Sri
Lanka’s better known legendary Islands ‘Madol Duwa’
(known to have habitants over 100 years ago) which
adorns the waters of the Koggala lake believed to be
the largest lake in Sri Lanka.
Bathing in the sea, which is in close proximity, is
not advisable due to under currents.
Galle
Absolutely ‘a must do’ excursion is to the fortified
city of Galle, which was a former Dutch East Indian
Company city and significant for trade in the period
of colonizing and for her splendid Dutch
architecture. Houses, churches, the glorious Fort
(1663), which was subsequently taken over by the
British, the Dutch Reformed Church and the Dutch
Museum at the famous ‘Amsterdamse Lijnbaangracht’
(New Ropewalk Street) still stand with much pride.
‘Delfts Blue’ items are still on display at the
museum and impressive antique tombs of the Dutch
East Indian Company sailors at the Dutch Reformed
Church.
